After much anticipation and speculation, it's official: "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" is set to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024.
The prequel to the acclaimed "Mad Max: Fury Road" will be screened out of competition on May 15 at the Grand Theatre Lumière at le Palais des Festivals. This premiere marks a return to Cannes for director George Miller, who first wowed audiences at the festival in 2015 with "Fury Road," a film that went on to become a critical and commercial success, earning $380.4 million worldwide and garnering 10 Oscar nominations.
"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa, a role originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in "Fury Road," and Chris Hemsworth as the villainous Warlord Dementus. Set more than a decade before the events of "Fury Road," the film follows a young Furiosa as she embarks on a journey fraught with trials and tribulations, striving to return to the Green Place of Many Mothers.
George Miller expressed his excitement about returning to Cannes, stating, "The idea of this prequel has been with me for over a decade. I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the Festival de Cannes – along with Anya, Chris, and Tom – to share 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.' This isn't Miller's first time at Cannes; he has twice been a jury member and served as president in 2016 for the 69th edition of the festival. In 2022, he presented "Three Thousand Years of Longing," starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, out of competition.
